Kontrol Freek Ultra – Review

After months of playing on my PS4 since launch I have only a few gripes with the system. One that it needs more games (they will soon come) and secondly and most importantly the analogue sticks. Some people may say “what? Are you mad???” I say no and I’m about to tell you why.
I play a lot of Fifa, when I say a lot I mean around 80 percent of my gaming is Fifa. Fifa is all about pass, move and quick precise dribbling in different directions not to mention manual shooting. I found the original analogues a little too small and not tall enough when compared to the Xbox’s or even the dual shock 3 controller. On top of that Sony have the well-known wear and tear already apparent on the dual shock 4 controller’s but credit to Sony they have addressed this and are sorting the problem out.

In my quest to make the console I love better and even more enjoyable for longer periods I came across Kontrol Freek’s Ultra analogue extenders, something that looks weird and that I’d never think of trying and I have to say I love them. I have used analogue grips before, these are not your regular analogue grips at all, they are extenders that aren’t as big as they look and in my opinion they severely improve the grip of the control and general movement making the dual shock 4 one of the best controllers I have ever used and now wish I searched them way back when I was using the PS3.

By slightly increasing the length of the analogue sticks, control is improved dramatically. A controller equipped with Kontrol Freek ULTRA provides a range of motion increase of over 40%, giving you the ability to make smaller, more precise in-game movements. This affords the luxury of turning up controller sensitivities to maximum levels so you can turn on your opponents faster and gain the upper-hand during intense moments on Battlefield, tough end to end battles on Fifa and your favourite moves in Injustice. KontrolFreek ULTRA also gives you better control while requiring less force—alleviating thumb-fatigue—and adding more comfort to long gaming sessions. In short, this increased precision and decreased thumb-fatigue results in a better way to game in every way I can think of.
You’ll find with Kontrol Freek Ultra’s is that less pressure is needed on the analogues themselves too meaning that only a slight touch is needed to push the analogue’s where needed. They are made out of a plastic like material and really fit the pad well and easy. They have clip like things on them that have to just be pushed onto the analogue sticks and away you go. The extenders fit on very nicely too with no movement or rubbing against the controller either. They sit tight and before you know it is hard to game without them.

Since using the product I have enjoyed my gaming more and feel as if I am in more control. I have tested them on Fifa as you all have probably gathered as well as Killzone and Battlefield 4. In Killzone and Battlefield I immediately realised that when zoomed in everything was a lot more precise and less jittery. I used to think “how the hell did he manage to keep the gun so still or aim so well?” I believe by using Kontrol Freek Ultra I have answered these questions I had in mind.
I really haven’t found a fault after using them for around 6 weeks now and you can see why casual and professional gamers rave about them. My only concern would be how durable they are if they were to be removed from time to time, if you have friends over or if your console is shared.

All in all a superb product and something I’d highly recommend to all gamers. You can grab them for around £10 in the UK and around $10 in the USA. Give them a try, you will not regret it.

For what Kontrol Freek are looking to do for gamers with their products, I give these Ultra’s a 9/10. I fail to see how they can be made better.
